Why does my Oliver 880 Diesel with front end loader puke up all of the hydraulic oil out of the breather when I use the hydraulic system. This only happens when it is cold outside. The hydrualic system works fine when it is warm outside. What should I be checking?

I had trouble like this with my unit ,just add a extra oil tank ,mounts easily on side of dash. I have one if you want to do this . It solves the problem.I got this from my oliver dealer many years ago.

This may seam silly. I can remember a couple of hydraulic systems doing what I think your are telling me. First of all do you have the base end of the loader cylinders connected to the hose with the restrictor in it. WHen the oil is cold and you let the loader down more oil is comming into the hydraulic unit than what the pump is pushing out. As the oil warms up the viscosity of the oil is less and the pump has an easier time suppling the rod end of the cylinders. I am guessing you have double acting lift cylinders. Remember to prevent cylinder caviatation, the pump should be pumping the same amount of oil into the loader lift cylinders as what is comming back to the unit. Questions? Send me a phone number and I will explain it. That is why anti-caviation check valves are popular add-ons for consumers purchasing hydraulic valves.

I'm guessing here, but it's a place to start. There is a small shield inside the hydraulic unit to keep the oil from blowing out when the relief valve opens. This shield has probably been removed for some reason. Why the relief valve opens when it's cold, I don't know. Perhaps allowing the oil to get up to operating temp before using it may help. I'd first look for the shield inside. Drop me an e-mail if you want further help regarding the shield. oleblu
