70 Hard to crank

I recently was able to get my Oliver 70 running but it has an 'interesting' hard cranking problem. When the tractor is started the engine will turn over about 1/4-1/2 turn and then stop, hold for a second or two, then another 1/4-1/2 turn, and repeat. And sometimes it will 'catch' and start. I did notice that the postive battery terminal (pos ground) gets very hot while doing this. The battery is new and the starter rebuilt.

I am new at this and do not know if this is typically for a 6 volt system or there is something wrong with mine?

Anybody have any suggestions?

Thank you in advance,

Jason

another thing it could be is advanced timing....if its to far advanced it will kick back or turn over and stop because the spark is to early and trying to ignite the mixture and drive the piston back down instead of on around....this would also cause a strain on the starter which in turn would heat up your battery terminal

The best place for the ground cable is on a starter bolt. So the current dont have to go thru several rusty connections.

a battery cable that gets warm is bad, one that gets hot definitly needs replaced.
follow olds advice you need big cables and clean connections
Good luck

I have a 77 that does the same thing when its cold out, you would think it would start but it always does. If I where you I'd put new battery cables on, don't use auto cables use a set made up from 0 size welding cable. 6 volt systems need all the battery that can be gotten to the starter, and since you cable gets hot it sounds like its heading south on you.

Thanks for the advice, I will give it a shot this weekend.

I had jumped to a worry about engine compresion or lubrication but you know now that I think about it makes sense as the juice is not getting to the frame through the ground wire.
