Herc D198 in a Cletrac HG???

Ive been thinking it would be nice to have more power to move dirt with the loader and I have an extra Hercules D198ER sitting around gathering dust. I did some measuring and it looks like it will fit the HG if mounted right above the frame rails and the radiator moved forward a few inches. Or maybe the IXK flywheel & bell housing could be adapted to the D198?

The big question is whether the HG trans, differential and final drive would handle the extra power. The D198 has about twice the rating (50HP & 150lbs torque) than the little Herc IXK3 thats in it now. Any comments appreciated,

Thanks

Thanks guys,

I thinking it's too much strain on the old Cletrac driveline, plus if I mount it above the frame rails I think the driveshaft angle would be too severe.

Thanks,

John

If you could make the adaptions it would probably be ok. These engines do have a lot of torque though. If you descide against, I'd like to know more about this motor so please email me.

Doubt if the original clutch would handle the extra torque. Seen one sold twice recently - had a modern two litre diesel engine fitted. Second time it was up for sale the clutch was slipping.
Also on the very early HGs the shafts from the tranny had no outboard bearings and apparently they screwed up the gears and pinions, before a modification was made.
Otherwise, they seem to accept the auxillary transmision OK (3 to 1 reduction or more), so g/box etc should probably be OK for the extra torque.
Regards, RAB
