I would like to remove the rear hubs on the 1600 so I can move them in 4-6", but after being tight for 42 years the U-bolts are rusted tight in the hubs. The nuts came right off. Is heat 'N beat the only method? We didn't paint the axels/hubs yet because I couldn't get them to move on Sunday, even tried a hyd. jack between the tractor and hub and they still don't want to move. That's how we pushed the rims off the hubs to roll the tires outside and it worked great.

Use a drift made of soft steel between the U-bolts and the sledge hammer to prevent damaging the threads very much. A little heat and a lot of beat will loosen them right up.

Don,
I use an air chisel with a tip that has a flat end. If you can't get the u-bolt to move, you may need to heat the hub some. Good luck.

When I moved mine on my 770, my bolts came loose, after working with them. I had the tractor completly assembled, and did one side at a time. I used the weight of the tractor to lift the keyed part of the hub off the axle. The only problem was that even with the tractors weight and the u-bolts loose the rust held the tractor in the air! I had a chain around the fender and the tire, so it was safe, in case it let go and walked. I finally rocked the tractor sideways, and broke it free. I was by myself next to a wall and did not want to get pinned, if the wheel moved. I could cant the wheel and jack the tractor up and down, and walk the wheel in. I know this won't help you because your in pieces yet. But what I'm saying is that the rust can hold the weight of the tractor. When I would open the jack up to drop the tractor, to try and knock it free, a lot of force was lost because of the tires cushioning the fall. Maybe a cast center or anything that is safe bolted to the hub would work as a "tool". If anyone reads this, I want to make sure they understand you could really get hurt doing this if something went wrong. I know we're all "gear heads" an have common sence, but maybe a newcomer may be reading this.
