I had the hydraulic unit off my 1650. When I put it back together, I could hear knock coming from the area where the hydraulic pump is located. The knock was present when the clutch is both engaged and disengaged. I took the unit back off and everything appears to be OK. The pump is easy to turn and there are no catches. Now, I'm stumped. Has anyone ever experienced this?

It could be as simple as a piece of gasket material or dirt got wedged in the teeth of the gears. when it comes to that place you get a knock. WB.

What for gaskets did you use when putting it back together. There might have not been enough clearance between the gears, which is set by the two gaskets between the rear and rockshaft hsng.

I used two new gaskets, one on each side of the pan. You make a good point. I wonder if you tighten the bolts too tight on the hydraulic unit if this situation could be created.

You know the old saying, Once the horse gets out of the barn, it is too late to shut the gate. If you take it off again, once you set the unit down, turn the engine a quarter turn so that if the gear teeth were lined up on each other so they can then mesh. The gear driven by the PTO can move and let the tooth from the pump drive fall in place. I had a new one once that had a noise when it was new. We checked the backlash somehow and made a little shim to change it. Confused?, ask away.
