My '65 1850 was tired so I pulled the engine and took it apart, theres alot of wear. So I had the head machined, then started looking at the rest, and at the very least I will need: a rebuilt crank(mine has wore splines from a loose dampner)a piston/sleeve set,and a rebuilt cam. It has the rope rear seal, and has MF and their logo stamped on the head. My question is are there other wear problems like timing gears I should replace? Or how to check for wear.Any infoe/tips on parts sources appreciated.

Paul,

Sounds like you have the bases pretty well covered. I can't say that I've ever seen bad timing gears in one of the 354 Perkins motors. Their pretty tough engines. You didn't mention your injectors and injector pump. Have you had them checked out? Also, as with any diesel, it would be good insurance to put all new headbolts in and new connecting rod bolts in.

thanks for the reply, I just got rebuilt injetors and injection pump last year so I should be fine there. I have heard high hour perkins are prone to having a wore brass injection pump timing gear, and thats what makes them miss some times.

Othier than that I think I know what I'm doing...LOL
