Discovered a wooden dowel inside the oil filter on my Oliver 60. Thought someone had stuck it in there for no real reason. Now I am told it may have had a purpose. Why was it there and how long to I need to cut a new one?

Thanks,

The wood plugs the hole so nothing gets in there. When you install the filter on the tractor you must REMOVE it before putting it on.

There should be a pipe sticking up from the base of the filter that goes in to the hole where the wood piece was.If this pipe is not there you will have low oil preasure and no oil flowing through the filter.

Larry is correct about the stick. On the 60 the
filter screws in the side of the block. The tube
takes the oil to the end of the filter. As it
comes back through the filter it is cleaned. Some
times the tube will come loose and will be discarded with the old filter.

No doubt the metal tube is gone. The filter does screw into the block by a large thread around the outside of the filter. There is a cast boss with a hole which lines up with the center of the filter. Nothing is in the hole. Anyone have any pictures of what should be there? Tractor has about 10 lbs of oil pressure.

The words below I had filed off L. Harsin's website some time ago about the "straw" on a 70 (which is probably the same as for the 60):

Oil Filter "Straw"

Are the Oliver 70's supposed to have a tube going into the center of the oil filter from the filter mounting base? If so,can you press in a short length of steel brake line to replace a missing tube? Thanks

Yes, they are supposed to have a tube. You can use a length of steel brake line as a replacement. There is a restrictor disc that sits below that tube. Check to see if that little disc is still in there. If it isn't, you'll have a problem. I'll check to see if I have one of these repair kits. Otherwise, I have a complete Filter Base for $20 plus shipping. Larry
