I am getting an intermittant sputter from the perkins in my 1850. It is worse when cold, better but not gone when the engine is warm. There is almost to sputtering at low RPM but the sputter or slight miss is more pronounced at high RPM. When I get the old girl under load the sputter disappears and the engine makes good smooth power throughout its RPM range. I am guessing that the timing must be slightly out but I do not want to fiddle with it becuase it just starts so darn well. Should I be looking at the valve lash, pulling injectors and looking at the pump timing?

What you are probably hearing is caused by the bronze gear in under the injestion pump getting wore out causing excess play. This plays havoc with the governor sounding like a miss then disappearing in under load. Our 1850 did the same thing until we replaced that gear.
