Do any of you experienced Oliver mechanics know if an 88 gas needs dowel pins between the head and the block? I tore this engine down last fall and sent it to the machine shop. Along with a LOT of other things, the block deck was re-surfaced and the head was sent to a head welder. Today I went to put the head on and the block deck had two dowel pins but the head did not have holes for the pins to go into. A look in the parts book for the 88 showed dowel pins, but it said diesel after the dowel pin description. Nothing was said about the gas engine. I called the machine shop that did the deck surfacing and the man who did it was out for the day so that was no help to me. This is a reputable larger machine shop that does a lot of work and is by no means shade tree but I wonder if the man who surfaced the block saw the empty holes and stuck a couple of pins in them, thinking pins were needed. I don't think the head welder sent the wrong head back because the part number on the head is the right one for this tractor.

Thank you; first straight forward answers I have received. Now I wonder where the machinist came up with the factory-looking dowels????

Diesel engines have the dowel pins, 88 gas engines do not.
