I just bought an old Oliver 550. When I try to start it, it backfires like a shotgun going off! It won"t start though. It started when I first got it. Then I noticed the carb was overflowing after I let it sit. The petcock does not work and evidently in the carbs internal shut off doesn"t either. I took the carb apart and cleaned it all up but when I put it all back together and tried to start it, I still get the loud backfire but no start! Can you help?

If it was running, and now it isn't, go back and look at the changes you made. Sounds like it is running lean or you have a timing problem. Since you took the carb apart, I would start there. Fix the fuel cutoff with a good cleaning or a rebuild kit. Then make sure all of the jets and passageways are clear. I use a fine wire, like a guitar string, to clean everything out. Check and make sure the spark plug wires are going where they are supposed to and then see if it will run. If not, then I would take a look at the distributor and make sure your point gap is ok etc.

Regards, Tip

I would check the timing.

Make sure your firing order is correct and that it isn't out of time. WE had a Case that did that, moved all the plug wires around until they were 180 from where we started and it fired righ tup.

If it is still not running after what you have been told to do time it by hand, bring #1 cylinder to top dead center then check points for being open if not open reset points I have had good luck going this way.
