Can someone point me in the right direction on how to find out how to add hydraulics and a 3 pt hitch to a Cockshutt 550? I can purchase one without those items that is running, but would need to add them. Thanks for any info/

Tony,
The 550 hydraulic pump sat on top of the rear end and there was a set of bevel gears to drive the pump.to put this in you would have to split tractor to install bevel gear and those may be hard to find. dont know how much work you want to get into. Mike

Thanks Mike. I guess I do not mind splitting the tractor as a project, but getting the gears would be a problem I suppose. Maybe I could just put a pump on the front pulley of the engine. I have seen a few pics of the original 3 pt hitch, but have not had any luck finding an original the last few weeks. Do you know if any of the after market hitches on this site would be close to fitting? It seems some of the Allis Chalmers stuff is close, but it is hard to tell by just looking.

You can actually get most, if not all, of the 3 point parts from Neil Grant in Crysler, Ontario- 613-987-9967. Don't remember the website, but if you surf Cockshutt sites, you'll find it. I bought a rockshaft from him, and it's very good. He also has linkage parts, and another guy who advertises on the Cockshutt trader page has the arms that attach to the rockshaft. I think the 550 was the successor to the 35, which I have, and at least on the 35, you have to have a top cover that has the loops built in for the 3 point rockshaft. Don't know if the 550 attaches the same way. As far as the hydraulics are concerned, you'll just about have to either find a donor tractor, or run a hydraulic pump off the front pulley.

OK, I guess I would need to just find the gears. I appreciate the info. I am trying not to purchase a repair manual, unless I buy the tractor.

Tony, when you called, I understood it was a 560 you were looking at. It is similar to the 35 - 50 models. The 550 is similar at the three point end of the hydraulics to a 540. I don"t have parts for these. However, every 540 except for a few industials had 3 pnt. Finding a wrecked 540 would give you quite a few parts for the hydraulics - casting, cylinder, arms, draft control - although the control quadrant is different. I would suspect that you could improvise something there. A good guy for new and used parts as I was telling you is Phil Heisey in PA. You will see his postings often here.
Good luck with the 550. With the Hercules engine and super traction, they were one of Cockshutt"s finest. Nebraska test performance was excellent. The 550 Diesel tested would pull more than a 40 or 50 Cockshutt, but weighed less and had less power.

Neil
