I prefer converting the 6-volt generators to 12-volts. It does not cost much more than rebuilding it as 6-volt, it looks original and if the battery runs down you can jump start the tractor and go. With and alternator, you can damage the alternator if you make it charge a dead battery. My 2 cents.

If you take your gen. mounting bracket off the front cover and turn the alt. upside down and drill out the 5/16 bolt treads that were used for belt tighting and then mount the alt. with a 5/16 bolt on the front cover and a longer 5/16 bolt on top. you will have to shim it out on the bottom and alter the top bracket a little. You will have to use a shorter belt and put the alt. as tight as possible against the engine.

I have changed all of my fleetlines over to 12 volts by taking the generator to a rebuilder and having convert over from 6 volts to 12 volts. That way the side curtain will close properly and it will still have that original look to the engine.

Hey Jeff,
I bought a one wire alternator for my 77 and the side curtain wouldn't close. I took it back to the alterantor shop where I bought it and the guy told me to come back in a few days and he would have something for me. He took an alternator from a Mitsubishi car and rebuilt it. It worked perfectly. It was only about 4" in diameter. Good luck.

I have an alternator on my 77 gas and I can close the side shield. I did have to put a guard on the alternator to keep the alternator fan from touching the side shield. Maybe a shorter belt would help you or a smaller alternator or as Jeff suggest a 12 volt generator.

I believe if you use a 12 Volt generator from a diesel 77, you'll have enough clearance to close the side shield..
