My Oliver 880 has a fairly loud knock when driven in 5th or 6th gear. My tractor is a Row Crop, wide front, no power steering and no power booster. I had the bull gear cover and hydraulic pump off to try and find something and everything looks good in there. No cracks or missing teeth on any of the gears. Would anyone have an idea of what the knock could be? Thanks, Jeff

First check the wheel clamps around the outside of the cast center that clamp the rim to the center. If these are loose, they will create a knocking sound that is practically indistinguishable from a diff. housing knock. Also check the axle clamps (the big U-bolts retaining the axle to the cast flange). After that, try to determine if there is a correlation between the timing of the sound and the rotation of the axle. If there is, the likely culprit is an axle bearing. If it seems to occur with a greater frequency, it should be more internal and could be an internal bearing that hasn't yet caused any catastrophic damage. But start with the outside first.

WFE, You said a mouth full. I had my 88 entirely apart, (back half). I pulled it out of the shop and the first time I turned a corner I got the same darned "kerchink." My dad just happened to be standing there and thought he heard something in the wheel area. I retightened the hubs and wheel bolts and "fixed the problem" w/ my inpact wrench. I learned most of what I know from a old country genius named Bill Corbin. He told me to look for the simple things first when there is a mechanical problem. I guess I forgot this time.

How do you think I learned. Those are the lessons you never forget. Glad to hear I'm not the only one who assumes the worst first. Regards.
