I was wondering if someone could help give me a little info. I am looking at buying a tractor which is listed as a cockshutt 560 2wd. I have not seen it yet as I have to drive a ways to get there. My main concern was whether or not I would be able to get parts for it. After looking through past posts on this forum, some people have said that the 560 did not come with a gas engine at all. Now I am really confused as I am not an "old timer." Did the 560 come with a gas engine? It is at a tractor dealer, so I am assuming they know it is not a diesel engine. Does anyone have any thoughts? Thanks!

Tony,
When you look at the tractor not only check the engine tag but look at the serial number of the tractor should be located on the right hand top edge of the engine tub (stamped into the casting) this will tell you what model it is. the number will start with 2 letters the first letter will determine the model and the second the year. a 540 will start with A, 550 with B, 560 with C, and 570 with D. someone also could have changed the engine.Mike

Mike,

Thanks for the info. I just got back from looking at it today and saw your message. I could not find the number, but then I probably did not look closely at the engine tub and it has had a lot of paint put on it over the years. The dealer had a sales brochure or book from years ago that said the 560 could be ordered with a gas engine. He did show it to me and it appeared it could be. It did have they said a Buda engine. There were some tags on the engine, but I did not get the numbers. I was more looking for a work tractor for a 40 acre farm I bought, and while it does have a rear PTO, there are no hydraulics on it and obviously no 3 pt hitch. The oil was milky, but they said it had been sitting outside for several months and if I was going to buy it, they would change the oil and filter, pressure test the cooling system and run it around the yard a few times to be sure there wasn"t a major engine problem. I thought that was more than fair. They took it on trade in from a local county government. They are asking $1000.00 for it and it is at Lulich Implement in Mason, WI. It can be viewed at www.equipmentlocator.com if anyone is interested in it. If there was an easy way to put hydraulics on it, I probably would buy it. Thanks for all of the help. I guess I will have to keep searching!

Tony: I tried to look it up and it came back no match. None of the 500 series Cockshutts had Buda engines. It is not that bad to put a hydraulic on it. Was it a 4 or 6 cylinder engine?

Hi,

Yes, it was a 4 cylinder engine. The numbers GO198 were on the engine tag along with the bore. I asked them about an engine rebuild kit if I would need one down the road and they were not sure they could get one, but then they said once I had it apart they felt confident they would be able to get parts to fit. What would it entail to get hydraulics on it? I assume I would need to mount a pump on the front of the engine, which I would feel comfortable doing, but I wasn't sure if what size pump and then if say I put a 20hp pump, is that overkill? I just do not know that much about tractors. Mostly experienced with cars, trucks and computers, but I am trying to convert to being a small time farmer. Thanks!

First of all why do you think you need a kit? Why not take a compression test and see what it is like. On 40 acres, what do you intend to sow? You may not get many hours on it in a years time. If it runs good etc, the price of a kit may never be recovered. Also the 550 was available with factory hydraulics including three point. Explain yourself a little more. Have you driven the tractor? How are the tires and what size are they. If you go back check the serial number. How many hours are on the tractor? Questions?

I have not driven it yet. The tires are decent. They said it ran well. I did not ask them to start it up as I was not sure about the milky oil, but they said it had sat outside for 6 months. I have about 30 acres of hay field and a good size dairy barn. I am planning to do some beef cows in the future. I was going to start with a mower for now, and then in a few years plow the field and plant new hay as it has not been done for over 30 years, but has been mowed regularly. I do not imagine I would be putting too many hours on it in a year. I guess I asked about the kit, because it seems things happen and I like to be prepared for the worst case scenario. The hours gauge says there is about 5,000 hours on it. I do remember seeing a hole in the front pulley for probably a hydraulic pump I would assume, and it did have brackets on the rear-end I assume for a 3 pt hitch. I have been told the 3 pt hitch is important because you can mount anything to it. Do you think it is a decent deal? Thanks.

Tony,
The 560 was not avaliable with a gas engine DIESEL ONLY. I dont know what they had for paper work saying that it was avaiable. but the tractor that is pictured is a 550 not a 560 and those were avaliable as either a gas or diesel it would have a 4cyl GO198 hercules engine not a buda engine. hope this helps Mike

The 560 was produced as a DIESEL. It used a Perkins engine. The first year they still used the L-4 Perkins as was used in the older Cockshutt Golden Eagle tractor. Then the last 3 years they used the same displacement Perkins but as a direct injection engine. This is know as the 270 D. I. engine. Both engines are of the same displacement. The tractor is very very fuel effecient. It is 50 horsepower. Like a lot of other 45 year old tractor some parts are available some are not.

Thank you for your quick response. I guess I will take a drive and try to determine exactly what kind of tractor or engine it is. Thanks!

So your manual does not say anything about the 560? I am mostly trying to find out if I can get a rebuild kit for the engine if I need to. I guess I probably will just have to see if I can get some numbers off of the engine and tractor.

On your kit. You will need to check with a Perkins distributor. While that engine was very popular in Europe, the only application of either the 270 or the L-4 in North America was in a Cockshutt. Also remember Perkins is now owned by Cat so a Cat dealer may be able to tell you what is available. A - E Clevite did have an aftermarket kit about 10 years ago. Questions.

Thank you for all of the info. I am going to go take a look tomorrow and try to get some numbers. The implement dealer says it is a 560 and it is gas and they can get a rebuild kit for the engine. From looking at this forum and all of the postings, I find it hard to believe, but I guess I will find out tomorrow. You guys have been great. I never imagined I would get answers so quickly. :-) Thanks!

Interested in this gaser!! If, by chance it is a gaser burning diesel and is a 1959-61 model I have a few spare engine parts. Have a very nice rebuilt head for a 59 yr. or later., etc.
Good Luck and let us know the finding. Very interesting.
I'm planning to put a couple of 4 cyl. cummins in my 560"s.
