I recently bought a 550 and noticed the transmission was completely dry. I poured in about 3 gallons of 10w30 oil which I thought was correct. It poured out the inspection plate for the PTO Adjustment. Would 90 wt do the same? In other words do I have a seal problem? Thanks, Allen

I would say you have a seal problem. The center section between the engine and the transmission should be dry. You may have a problem with more than one seal.

Where can I purchase the seals for the transmission? Will I need any special tools to pull the old seals. Thanks, Allen L.

Do you have a manual? You will need to do what is know as a Z split of the tractor. A means of supporting the front of the tractor and a good floor jack will be necessary. You may also need to replace some needle bearings at least I would. If your tractor has a loader take it off first. You will need to fabricate a spaner wrench also. Questions?

You fellows are great! The tool you mentioned must be to remove and install the new seals. Is that correct? I have the owners manual which does talk about the split. Is there a more detailed manual I could purchase and if so could you tell me where to get it? Also where might I obtain new seals? Thanks again, Allen

The spanner tool is used to remove a large nut holding the hub which the PTO friction discs ride inside. The method used by many is a long rod and a big hammer due to the angle involved this deforms the slots. The pipe tool I made is east off and on. This hub must be removed to replace "O" rings inside.
