Looked at a real nice 550 today. Problem is it has a loader on it and a concrete filled drum on the 3 pt arms for weight. Supposedly the drum has been there for 20-25 years, and never raised. Now the lever is froze tight. What could be the problem? Is this a big fix? Also, the PTO hadn"t been used in same amount of years. Is there anything to be concerned about?

The friction pad on the lever itself may freeze up with non use (or outside storage, as in my case). I removed the nut holding it on, but couldn't get the lever to come off. Kept spraying it with PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench, etc., and tapping it with a drift- eventually, it loosened up.

Just slowly turn on the pto.Do not force the motor to turn it.As for the lever did you gently hit it with the palm of your hand? it may not be as bad as you think. If it is realy froze, check the oil level in the hydo block (it could be very bad, like water).

3 pt: I pushed as hard as I would on a tractor I didn't own yet. It's froze solid. The oil is clear, not milky, and was up to level.

The PTO turned okay and engaged fine, I was just wondering if it's possible it will slip under load. Also, the tach showed 540/1000. This tractor (1974 model) didn't hve the dual speed optin, did it?

It may have had the tac changed or it mite have come with the gear box that bolted on to the 540 shaft and convertid it to 1000

Our 550 had the brake pedels rusted up and when you step on the brake it would move the pto lever they all hinged off the same thing be shur this is not the case or it will try to pull the pto out of gear
