I was talking to a friend of mine that drives 70 miles a day to work round trip. He uses a can of STP in every oil change, he runs these work cars 250000 plus with no problems, I never used additives much, just wondering your thoughts on using these in the old tractors that are getting somewhat tired and weak, and some blowby or is it a waste of time and money, and maybe do damage to engine.Thank you for your thoughts. I've always figured that if the additives were so good, the oil companies would have put it in the oil to begin with. The one that gets me is Marvel Mystery Oil. Why would anyone want to put something "mysterious" in their engine?

I have never been one to put any dditives in anything and most of my vehicles have 250,000 miles or more when I retire them with no engine overhauls. The other day I did buy some stuff that is the same as STP, for my chevette and it did what it was supposed to do. When I bought this car it had 48000 miles on it and one rod had a slight knock when the engine was just coasting along down the road, not during acceleration or deceleration. Well, it now has 125000 miles and it still knocks only a little louder, so I put this 'viscosity improver' stuff or what I call 'overhaul in a can' in it and by golly, the knock stopped! It sounds like a different car now. For how long this will keep the engine quiet is still up in the air, but maybe maybe this will enable me to keep my little 40 mpg lumberwagon a little longer.

I use additives in both my car and pickup. I only use them about every other oil change and in my opinion they help keep the seals conditioned and help with leaks. Never used any in a tractor, but it might be something to look into. I also think that using good oils makes a difference too. I, like "old", use only Valvoline racing oil in all of my gas engines, including my race car. In case anyone is curious to the piant scheme of the car, AGCO Orange & Oliver Green.
