The 66 looked funny when I let the clutch out yesterday. Turns out the right frame rail is cracked just in front of where it bolts to the trans. Has anyone ever succesfully welded one I won"t take it off to weld it. If I have to take it off I will just repace it

Tom a friend of mine broke his 88 in the exact same place a couple of years ago. It also broke on the left side. The right side was cracked from the top to bottom and the left was cracked about 4" from the top down. My dad who's been a pipefitter for about forty years ground it down to a "V" Crack about and 1 1/2" wide and 1 1/2 deep. He slowly filled the crack back in with a rod called Certainium (889SP?). It was pretty expensive and it was pretty slow going. When Dad was done my friend took it and pulled at the local antique tractor pull (Dad wasn't too crazy about him pulling it) and it placed 3rd out of 40 tractors. The weld held great. We always thought the holes the sheet metal bolted to were way to deep and that's why the frame cracked. I have some pictures of the repairs we did I can email them to you if you'd like. If you have any questions email me.

Just replace it. A used tub for my 1600 cost $325 2 years ago at Wisconsin Tractor Parts. I thought about welding it also, but in the end it really wasn't worth it because it could still crack if I didn't do it just right, or even if I did. Donovan from Wisconsin

A friend up the road wants to try cast rod and a buzz box. I only have a mig so it's going up there. We will try it it sounds better than replacing it. If it won't hold then I will have to replace it. Velker in abbotsford is too expensive. Got to support local business. Tom

It was easier to replace it for me because I had it stripped down anyways. Hope it works. I've done some other cast welding but never anything that critical. Biggest one I did was the clevis for our JD disk. I snapped the top half off when stuck in the mud. Grooved it out about 1" at the top and layered it in there. It's held for 4-5 years now.
