Looking to put a set of sleeves and pistons in a 1600 with the 231 in it, the pistons measure 3.5". Am trying to figre out if the sleeves and pistons out of an 88 are the same or if a person needs to go with something more involved. On the surface, the two engines, the early 88 and the 1600 look exactly the same. Is there something deeper to look at here or am I mistaken? When we started pricing out kits, the one place told us that 88 sleeves and pistons will not fit. What gives? Hopefully someone can shed some light on this for me.

Thanks,

Scott

Cobroller is correct. The 1600 gas engines have a dish in the piston. If you put in the flat top 880 pistons you will have a problem. Been there and did that so to speak. the 3-7/8 kit sounds like an old M & W kit. Agco also have some prices on kits. I would look at a 1650 gas kit from Agco. Questions?

Scott, shouldn't be a problem to put in the same overbores offered for 88s through 880s into this 1600. We did an early 1600 with the 231 and put in the 3 3/4" set, but you could also, as mentioned go with 3 7/8". Only difference I can think of is that original 88 pistons were iron whereas 1600 were aluminum. Pretty sure all you can get now are aluminum, unless you find some N.O.S.

I had a scored liner in my 1650 gas. I installed a used liner from an 880 diesel. Fit just fine.

It is nearly the same block.

we sell engine kits and the 88 and the 1600 use a different piston set the 1600 goes to 37/8 where the 88 goes to 33/4

The 1600 gas head has a different combustion chamber than an 88 and I think the 1600 piston had a dish in the piston top instead of being flat.

I think Howards has a 3 7/8 kit for the 1600, 1650, 1655, and 2-70 gas engines. Agco sells 3 3/4 - OEM for everything but the 1600. I"m sure there are other places that can get you the parts you need. As noted in some past posts I would also install the one piece wrist pin bushings.

Howards had or probably still has a 3-7/8 M & W kit. My neighbor put one in his 1650.

The 3 7/8 dome pistons will not work on 1600 head without modifications.

We used 3 3/4" flat top pistons in ours to raise compression. Had to retard timing a little on the dyno, but it increased hp to just about 90. Tractor sure worked great on the silage blower after that.
