880 hydraulic question

I was losing oil into the tranny so I decided to pull it apart to see what is wrong. The left hand valve was sticking on the down stroke it hadn't been hooked up or used from the previous owner so I wanted to use it well one day I checked the hydraulic oil it was empty. Upon unbolting the reservoir a pretty good size piece of metal fell out on the floor. I know from previous readings the base plate can crack and the pump itself can bust but what had happened at some point of using the left valve the front side blew out. There are no cracks in the base plate and the pump looks o.k. also. If the valve blew out, where is the oil seeping into the tranny? Wouldn't it just run back into the reservor? The pump worked just fine as long as I kept oil in the reservor. Thanks a bunch for all replies.

The side blew out or the front came off?. Here, take the unit off the tractor, with pump on and take the top part of the reservoit off. Make sure the oil is drained out of the reservoir and put either 2 quart of diesel fuel or Type a fluid in the reservoit. Then see what or where underneath the baseplate gets wet from fuel or the type A.

Thanks, J., good to hear from you again. The left valve has a hole in the front left side, I'll try what you said to see where the oil's going and get back to you this evening. Have you ever seen a valve burst? Thanks for the help once again. I posted a question for you on a previous page, haven't looked there yet for a reply. Thank you so much.

I went ahead and bolted it back together on the work bench then I poured about a gallon of diesel into it haven't seen any leaks after three hours. Could the pump be leaking just as it is running? Base plate looks good, I'm hoping something will seep out overnite. Thanks for helping!

More than likly your pump needs needle bearings and oil seals installed unless your center plate is cracked. I do 5 or so a year on customer tractors. Check to see if your releif valve spring is set too high for pressure, this will cause the hydraulic spool to split through the side (been there done that). I have also had the aluminum base crack next to the pump mounting stusd and leak only when the tractor runs. Just some suggestions.

Thanks! I am still observing the thing on the bench, I went ahead and ordered everything one would need from O'brien's too reseal the pump. There is just a little drip out of the pump spline ends, so I'm going to overhaul it so to speak. I will check around the mounting studs for cracks, too. Thanks again!
