Surely other people out there have had problems with the top oil seal blowing out of a Gemmer power steering unit. I have an 1800 that keeps blowing the seal out. It had a front loader on it and I thought that may be the problem. I took it off and it did not blow for a while. Then it did. I have put six seals in it ($35 a piece). Now I have the unit off and was hoping to see a ring broken or something but nothing looks obvious. Any ideas?

I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 1800B. I HAVE HAD SEALS BLOW OUT 3 OR 4 TIMES. I HAVE TRIED THE OLDER AND CHEAPER AGCO, AUTO STORE SEALS. I CURRENTLY HAVE THE NEWER,$35.00 AGCO SEAL IN IT WITH ONLY A FEW HOURS. NO LEAKS YET. I ALSO HAVE A PRESSURE GUAGE HOOKED UP TO CHECK PRESSURE. PRESSURES ARE LOW, STEERING A LITTLE HARD, BUT I HAVEN`T LOCKED IT OUT YET. "SCARED". I ASSUMED THE SEAL WAS BLOWING WHEN TURNED HARD TO LOCK? THE SEAL LARRY HAS IS PROBABLY THE NEW ONE I HAVE. MAYBE WORTH A TRY. STEVE

What do you mean when you say the seal blows out? If is pops out is the snap ring that holds it there? Have you had the unit off and replaced any other seals? I wonder if you have some other seals that leak and you are getting excessive pressure in that areaQuestions?

It does not physically blow the entire seal and housing out it just blows the rubber insert and squirts hydraulic fluid everywhere. I have the unit out now and there does not appear to be another seal bad. I thought an o-ring may be bad or something. The system operates at about1000psi according to the manual and I know that that kind of pressure is not supposed to get to that oil seal. The only valve that I see is the fluid divider which only switches directions for left and right but it does not appear to be stuck. The snap ring is still in place.

Man this is 30 years after working on the last one of them, but the seals that I am refering to are internally. I would look around kind of like Larry says. You convert that over to hydrostatic steering and you will think you traded tractors. It handle that much nicer.

This is common evan if you get a rebuilt unit it will likely do the same thing in a few months time. The best fix is char-lin unit.

NOTE MY CORRECT EMAIL ADDRESS
I have seals on stock that were the lastest used and improved upon, that Cockshutt used on 550-560-570-570S tractors. This same Gemmer base unit was used on late 770/880 and early 1800 Olivers. The seal is different from the one that you are currently using. My seals fits right in as a alternate replacement to your current seal.
Please let me know when I can assist you further.
