550 guage question

Hi folks,
I've changed my gas 550 from generator to GM 10SI (3 wire) alternator and rewired it as there wasn't much left of the old wiring. I have the cluster guages working properly with the exception of the purple wire that runs from the AMP lamp on the cluster guage to the A lead on the old generator. That A lead (from a wiring diagram) would run to the F lead on the regulator. I'm not sure where the purple wire ought to connect now - #1 on the new alternator maybe? I wired the input side of the cluster guages (black wire)as it was before, to IGN on the starter switch. The oil lamp lights (buzzer must be bad, it don't buzz) when key switch is turned to ACC or ON, goes off at START and remains off when running. It would be nice to have both OIL and AMP lamps working right. If anyone knows, I'd sure appreciate some help, hate to let the smoke out of the cluster guages...

Did you run a heavy wire like 10 gauge from the B terminal of the alternator? That alternator has a lot more output than that generator did and something goes astray you can have a fire because of too small of wiring. Also do you have 3 wires on the alternator and where do you have the other 2 going? Do you have a voltmeter

I used 10 ga. from Alternator terminal 1 to IGN side of the ignition switch (+ coil wire connects there as well, - coil wire to distributor). Also used 10 ga. from BAT on alternator to BATT at starter solenoid where + lead from battery connects. Used 12 ga. from terminal 2 on alternator to BATT on alternator. I have and can use a voltmeter. Any ideas? Thanks!

I thought of this just now. In simple terms you need to wire this like a late 770 with a replacement SI alternator.

Yes I have some ideas. First of all do you have a wiring schematic? Next what do you have in the other terminal on the alternator. You see your amp light is voltage sensitive if I remember correctly and your A F & L terminals on the generator are not necessary on the alternator. I need your phone number and I need to lokk at a wiring diagram and due to the busy holiday schedule it will not be until Sunday or maybe Wednesday morning morning, but I need to talk to you first. Questions?

I need to sleep on this tonight. It probably has been 30 to 35 years since I have had to check something like this out on a 550-770 or 880. Find me on the HPOCA site. Send me a PM. I would like to talk to you as I am preparing a troubleshooting thing for the HPOCA although the next part is for generators only ( I think) What was the problem with your generator?
