I always thought that the later model 77"s (ie disc brake tractors) had a lower speed rear end, but after looking at the parts manual it seems that the ratios were availble in either one. How can I tell what ratio a tractor has without taking it apart?
Thanks
Rich

The earliest production (first two years) were the fastest. Those tractors are between serial numbers 320001 & 325700. The last three digits in the serial number should be C-77. Tractors after Serial number 325701 were slowed down from a 1st gear speed of 2.63 to 2.45 and the digits after the dash should be C-77-D or C-2. There is a special low speed powertrain that has a 1st gear speed of 1.91. It is identified as C-77-C or C-5 in the last digits. The exception to the above is if you have a tractor with either a serial number with first two digits of 35 or 45, there is not any identification in the serial number for the powertrain.

Was the change in the ring and pinion or in the transmission gears?

I believe it is on your serial no, plate in the code.Don't have a 77 operator manual but in my 770 book it tells different ratio and tire size speeds.
