I have been playing with the 1850 and the pattern doesn"t match the decal on the dash. It seems to me that it has two rows of gears with 3 in each row..... ..But the decal on the dash has them something like this

1 R1 2 R2 N N
3 4 Then 5 6

It doesn"t make any sense to me as there seems to be a gear at each - mark like below.....

- - - N
- - -

I am more confused each time I get on the beast?????

If this come through right I think this could be your pattern. At least this is what my 1600 has. And if I recall right it was the pattern on a 1946 Oliver 60 that we had years ago.
I have tried this. If you remove the periods in the drawing you should have your pattern.

6..... ..R2 +--N--+ 3....|....4 ..... |..... 5....|....R1 +--N--+ 1..... ...2

Dale,

You are right that is the 1600, 1650 and 1655 pattern, but the 1850 had a different pattern.

The 1850 pattern should be

2 R1
1 4

5 R2
3 6

Least taht is the way my 1850 is.

My 1850 has same shift pattern as Shep's . I think this is also the shift pattern on the 1855/1955s .

In your photo, just above the steering colum is a valve that can be set to 2 differnt settings. What is it for and what does it do?

Thanks
Paul

per 1650 manual
BLOCKING VALVE ADJUSTMENT
The Hydra motor blocking valve provides a means of matching steering to type of operation being performed. When blocking valve screw is pushed in and locked in place, ground irregularities are felt on steering wheel. BLOCKING VALVE SCREW MUST BE IN THIS LOCKED POSITION BEFORE TOWING TRACTOR AND WHEN BRAKES ARE TO BE USED AS A STEERING AID. When blocking valve screw is released, front wheels are held hydraulically and cannot be pulled off course by ground irregularities.

Ditto the 1550. Used to set it, jump off the tractor and onto the trailer to throw hay off for the cows, then jump back on the tractor to drive back to the barn. It kept a pretty good straight line. I can't recall the name of the Patron Saint of Fools, but I had him sitting on my shoulder during my younger days, I think.

1850 Operators Manual says same thing about blocking valve on 1850

If your refering to the valve on the power steering hydra motor, it's a blocking valve. I believe you would use it if you were towing your tractor to allow steering without hydraulic pressure.

A few questions about this in reply to Myron KY, 11-30-2004 12:36:53
Its fun getting off the 1850 that you have been driving all day, and then stepping on to the 1655 and putting it in the wrong gear ?????

Wonder why Oliver did that??

Out of all my Olivers they only have two different shift patterns. The one pattern is on both the 1655's and I would guess the 1600 and 1650, and probably all the 15xx tractors. The 1850 shift pattern seems to be for all the rest, the 17xx, 18xx, 19xx, 20xx, and 21xx, as well as my G-1355.

So were there any other patterns on the 4 digets besides those two or does any one know???

I believe my 1555 has the same shift pattern as the 1650 and 1655 Shep discussed . I know definately 3rd and 4th are in the same box because I shift back and forth between them to change speeds when bush hogging .

Niether of your descriptions is correct. There is a 2 speed shifter that has 2 neutrals one above the other. You can axcess the 3 forward and 1 reverse from each neutral, one set is faster than the other.Practice shifting between the neutrals(forward and back) and cross ways in both of them. You should find an I pattern in neutral.

Sorry, the one on the decal looks something like this

1 R1 N
3 5

2 R2 N
4 6

Or some like that..... ..... I still have yet to see the Pattern like you describe Larry. I am going to go out and examine this some more however.

You need to think about your shift pattern as being two H patterns, one above the other. As Larry said get used to moving the shifter to the right and left.

When it is to the left you should be able to move it forward and back into gear, the same with it all the way to the right.

Now when you have the shifter centered between right and left, you should be able to move it forward or back depending on wether you are in the high or low range of gears. You are changing between a high range and a low range and three different forward speeds and reverse all with one shifter! The Oliver engineers were pretty ingenious when they came up with that. WB.

Was Oliver the first? I know my grandfather's 195? Case 701 had the same basic arrangement.

Cochshutt uses that double H patter too. but they used it AFTER Oliver used it

I had one man try to tell me all Olivers had the same gear pattern--- I knew better they have the same Pattern but not the same Gear Pattern.
