I am an old IH and JD 2 cylinder guy, and entered the world of the "Real Mean Green" and got a cheap 1850D. Anyhow the Perkins starts and runs well until about 1500 RPM then has a miss from their on up. Any ideas on what to check? Injectors don't seem bad? Only thing I can think of is they are dumping instead of spraying fuel as it has a blue smoke.

The 3pt also won't lower? It eventually goes down, but not immediately, even with weight on it.

PTO doesn't see to shut off. Don't have the book to do the adjustments.

I'd appreciate any help. Oh, any favorites on where to get parts? I need the balls for the 3pt and the cast top link bracket(Its broken).

I hope she runs in the field as mean as it sounds. Wonder if it will hack 6-16's like my neighbors IH 766D(Grin).

Hey TP, you old IH and 2 cyl. guy! Congratulations on your purchase of the 1850D. I have one too. No problem with flutter, or with the 3 pt. I do have a service manual though.

Under troubleshooting section "Unit will not lower", it lists the following potential problems: 1. Pilot spool sticking in servo valve.
2. Lowering valve sticking or worn in servo valve.
3. Lowering valve check valve not opening.

Good luck. I hope the solution is just taking it apart and cleaning up the servo valve assembly!

Yeah, wished I could have got NYBills 1466 but it was just to heavy for anyone I know to haul it..... Oh well.

Anyhow I got this pretty cheap! Which is a plus. I don't know what to think of it yet, but my brother really likes the old girl. I have to find a bigger back blade so he can move snow. It has a Cozy Cab too!

Should have pictures tonight.

I got mine cheap too. With a Bushhog loader (no cab). It's in great shape. I use it for moving round bales. As you know, I really like red tractors, too. But I have been pretty impressed with this Ollie! With the loader, I could use more rear weight, and a Reverse-o-Torque in place of the Hydraul-Shift!

Overall, it's a pretty comfortable tractor to operate, and pretty nimble for as big as it is.

Let me know if I can look up anything for you before you get a manual.

Dale

Got two 1850D with 354 perkins around here. They both miss or flutter for about 20 min or so until warmed up. More so in winter than summer. Used to worry about. they work and that's all that counts with us.

How do I get ahold of you? I was going to make a toplink bracket in the machine shop, but I won't even waste my time at that price.

Can't really help you much if any but the PTO spin is probably just an oil spin. All my olivers do that when cold or when nothing is hooked up to the PTO. Also since your an IH man let me tell you about something I did this summer. I had a Farmall 450 55HP and I now have a Super 88 oliver 55HP well the 88 pulls circles around the 450 I had, sold it because it wouldn't pull good enough. So yes your new tractor should out pull your friends tractor.

354 flutter in reply to old, 11-26-2004 15:32:25
hi

i have an 1850 with the 354 perkins also. and it has the same flutter you talk about. i've done some research on this and the problem and the problem lies in the fuel pump drive. their is a worm gear that is driven off the front timming gears. this is the same shaft that's sticking out of the back of the casting for the fuel pump that you see rotating. anyway the part that is bad is the gear at the base of the fuel pump that is driven by the worm gear. the worm gear is steal and the driven gear is brass and after 30+ years a little wear occurs.

Depending on if it has the heavier drive that little shaft will twist. I have had a few where flow timing the pump will take care of the flutter.
