Can I remove the light switch. Ground the field wire that went to it, and use a twelve volt battery

Hi,
I see your wife is with Farm Collector. Are you from Topeka? I'm within 40 miles of there.
Geoffrey

The simplest way to get your 3 brush generater working properly without the light switch is to use a voltage regulator(available from tractor supply) this will eliminate the need for the light switch and the cutout relay. This is just for the 6 volt system. If yo uare going to use the original 6 volt generator you should keep the rest of the tractor 6 volt. If not you will have to get a 12 volt generator or alternator, as well as change the coil and battery. hope this is helpful

I don't think that a regulater will work for a generator that normally has a cut off with a field.

How are you going to regulate the output? What are you using for a cut out?

I was going to us the regulater with two post one coming from the armature to the regulater and from the regulater to the battery

That is not a regulator. It is the cut out relay.
Output is controllef by the position of the third brush and the resistors in the light switch. Does it charge now> We are doing a troubleshooting for the Hart Parr Oliver magazine 2 issues from now, Would you like to be a test case and try out the information before hand?

I havn't put the generator back together yet. Will try today. See if I can get anything out of it. I don't have the light switch any more. Was going to try to make it work with out it. I probaly wouldn't be a very good test subject. But, I sure like the info.

Do you know what a motor test of a generator is?You need to do that before you put it on the tractor. Nothing fancy required. Do you have an ohmmeter and a voltmeter? Go to hartparroliver.org and leave me a message or contact Becky. Her husband knows how to contact me. A 60 should work on 6 volts just fine.

I'm showing a charge on my generator. By using a drill and a volt meter. I polorized it with the batter charger. But, I show a neg. - charge with the tractor running. Started and running tractor on a 12 volt Battery, with out the generator hooked to it. still neg charge. going after 8 volt battery. hook up pos. or neg. ground. ???

How much voltage do you have? does your cut out work. It is positive ground. Did you cross the wire going to the moveable third brush? They must cross. Will the generator turn as a motor, I asked that before and if so how fast will it turn? Where did you complete the field circuit?

Well how did you hook this up? You need 3 jumper cables. If you have the leads reversed on the two brushes it will also show negative.Did it turn fast or real slow? You need to be able to get both speeds. Send me a phone number Problems like this are a good challange.

No, I did not get two speeds. I don't think the cut out is working. I get a neg. on volt. or .04 But if I ground the field I get 9.0 to 11.O volts and it will pull the engine of the tractor. if I put it on the Battery. Show neg off the generator.

Yes, I have a volt meter. I'll work on getting it back together and working. That brush working off the field has to be adjusted? I'll try getting ahold of you threw Hart Parr. The lady my wife has talked to was Sherry.

Could I use a voltage regulater with 3 post one for the armature, one for the field, other to the battery. No, I wasn't planning to change the speed of the generator. If I used a three post regulater, I might just use a 8 volt battery. I wasn't planing to worry about lights. Just try to get the battery to charge
