I have a 1650 that is very cold blooded.
I have worked on the injector pump and may have the timing gear off a tooth. When you rev it up,
it spits flame out the exhaust. Any tips for easier starting and to put out the flames?

if you have a later 1650 and you are turning over fast enough and have good transfer pump pressure, your valves are probably recessed to far into the head. they should stand out of the head about 29-40 thousants-works wonders on the old gals. most werent right from the factory.

My old 1650 is a hard starter as well, summer time if the sun goes behind a cloud we have to give it a sniff of either to get her to go, until I fixed the starter. Now she fires up real easy, just was not turning good enough.

Well first of all check the timing. You need to get rid of the flame! Do you have an engine with a Lanova combuistion Chamber or the direct injection engine? Three things to look at. Compression, 350 pounds is nice, Cranking speed, Have you put a voltmeter on the starting circuit to see if you have more voltage loss than what is allowable. How about the injection nozzles, Do they need to be checked? How well are they atomizing the fuel? How does it act when you try to start the engine? Do you have a lot of smoke, little smoke and what color is this smoke. Do you have a block heater? They are a very good investment. Questions?

How does the tractor run in the summer time?
My 1650 would start fine all summer long w/o assist until the first snow flake fell and then needed to be plugged in to warm the head up before it would start. They are very cold blooded but with a good circulating heater and the sides tarped in you are good until about -35. If your engine is a little on the worn out side you are fighting a loosing battle, the wakesha is very , very hard starting once it gets a little long in the tooth.

my 1550 gets used to load my sander in the winter, move a little snow and when needed run my generator. Maybe I have just been lucky but, It will almost always start if I take my time, I will hold the pre-heat button for a full minute, then just bump the engine over, hold for a full minute again, (using my watch or I dont wait long enough) and then crank her to start. With winter blend 50/50 Diesel/Kero I have started at minus 20just using the single battery in the tractor, -30 using a truck to boost her off
