Hi, I'm new at posting to this list. I have 2 Fleetline 77's that I'm slowly restoring. One has a factory wide front end and the other one will have one shortly. I'm going to put a front end loader on one and would like to have power steering for that tractor. The Fleetline 77's weren't available from the factory with power steering. Does anyone know of an aftermarket unit to convert one to power steering? A while back I believe someone posted something about a Char-Lynn unit. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

The Char-Lynn unit is a torque amplifier that you graft into your steering shaft, and supply with (preferably) a 3 gpm automotive power steering pump, available on every car at your local wrecking yard. You have to make a bracket to mount the torque amplifier, and a bracket to mount the pump. They work very nicely, but were taken off the market many years ago because guys were adapting them to cars, and a failure at 70 MPH can be disastrous. Somebody is putting together kits again, but they're pricey. The next guy to post will remember the website. They work fine on rigs with a long steering shaft, but hard to adapt to the short vertical enclosed shafts like on smaller Fords and the like.

Found this in the archives.

Adding power steering to a 77

Rod (NH) has also linked to his web site showing pictures of the Char-lynn.

Hello everyone,

It's been a while since I posted to this website.

Hopefully this will work and the pictures will show up. These are of what I believe to be an original Char Lynn kit installed on a 1955 Super 77. This tractor originally had the pipe cultivators and a narrow front end which made for some hard manual steering. This kit was added and I believe it to be complete. There is a reservoir mounted under the hood on top of the valve cover. I posted this in hopes it would better illustrate how the kit worked and mounted on the Super 77.

Mike, Myron, & Von. Thanks for your replies. The information will really help when I get a little farther along in my restorations. Earl
