My brother in law asked me to repair a clutch on his Oliver 55. I guess he figures since I pull garden tractors I'm a mechanic. He was using a rear blade to push brush and the tractor hung in gear. It seems the clutch won't disengage. When the engine is turned off the transmission shifts fine. When it is started in neutral it cannot be shifted into gear. The gears grind. It appears to me there is a bit of free play in the clutch adjuster on the side of the bellhousing. I was going to tighten it up but didn't have a super deep socket to reach the nut. The nut is really tight. I tried to turn it with a combination wrench but the front axle radius arm was in the way. Am I doing the right thing here or is there some other reason the clutch is stuck?

Two posiabilities. The free travel is excessive, 3/4 to 1 inch at the stop will be plenty. Second item, if your pilot bearing which is located in the flywheel is tied up the clutch will also not release. Soak that nut up or remove the rod from the petal. I have seen that adjusting rod twist off. Questions?
