First, ignition, tractor will idle all day, no problem, was working on, will not reve up. Lost fire to the coil and plugs. Now I do have some experience, dug out my old manuels, did all the tests, still no fire. Replaced points, plugs, cond. and coil, still no fire. Retested everything again, checked ok. Just for laughs, put old cond back in, still no fire. Started to recheck everything again, now I have fire and no idea why, don't know what changed. Second, this is a 550 industrial tractor, will idel, no problems, but will not reve up, rebuilt carb, seems ok. Unhooked everthing from the govner, can feel pressure on the govener lever with engine running but makes no difference what position the govner is in or the throttle lever is in, just sits there and purrs, nothing else. Am I looking at the carb, govner or possibly the dist weights for advanced timing. Any help?
Thanks,
Jasper

You may have a problem with the carb throttle shaft. The linkage my be loose on the shaft so no rev up. Or you could also have other carb problems too

Unhook the linkage rod that goes from the governor to the carburetor. Get someone else to start the tractor and then you move the carburetor throttle shaft by hand. If it speeds up, watch the arm on the governor especially if you left the hand throttle in the idle position. If it does not speed up there is something wrong inside the carburetor. The governor arm should move when engine speed increases if the throttle linkage is set in the idle position, if not something is wrong with your governor assembly/ Questions? Clear as dirty mud?

When you take the carb off does the throttle shaft move to both extreem positions (hit the idle screw and the high speed stop)? How about float level, Do you have the correct float level? It will run with coil being backwards, but it takes more voltage to fire the plugs.
If you take a plug wire off a plug hold it 3/8 inch from the plug end, will it jump to the plug with a good blue color?

The shaft its probably loose from the arm, in some carbs theres a small roll pin that holds it to the shaft, the can move but the shaft may not be so it doesn't open up the butterfly

That depends on if its positive or negative ground. If its positive ground the + on the coil goes to the distubor.

I purchased a 550 Gas about 1986 and then my brother and nephews let me help overhaul it. Still have and like to use it.
Part of the overhaul included going through the carb. While putting it back together I tightened too much on what I think is called the main jet. Ordered a new on from "Oliver" (White) at that time. It came with the same part# stamped in the brass as the old one. Put it in, tractor cranked up fine, but would die when you opened the throttle unless you also choked it. My brother kept thinking that there was some trash in there somewhere!
Well, I brought it home. Started subsoiling and tilling about 8 acres of cleared ground for pasture. Broadcast the fescue and drug over it. All with the choke on if the throttle was more than idling.

Took that carb apart one more time after looking at the old jet the night before when it dawned on me -- the hole in the new jet is smaller than the old! Double checked with drill bit and drilled out the new one to the old size and it still works correctly! Now that choke goes off almost immediately when it first fires up.

One other instance, in the winter I was getting hay after a snow. The tractor would crank and run, but wouldn"t go much over idle. Finally I checked the oil-bath air cleaner. Water had collected in the oil pan at the bottom, frozen, and was restricting air flow. Threw out the ice, put in fresh oil and it worked correctly!
