1960 olver 550 knock

i have a 1960 oliver 550 diesle and it started knocking the other day think its a rod? anyone know where i can get one and how hard it is to replace? also i need a shop maneul cd if anyone knose a good link?? thanks fred

Hi fred,

What does the knocking sound like, ie, why do you think its a rod? A small amount of knocking is acceptable in an older diesel, you can help this by putting in some thicker oil. Generally if you replace 1 rod its a good idea when you have her all apart to see if anything else needs repairs/rebuild, maybe it neds a bottom end overhaul etc.

How many hrs on her? Does it start well?
Does the knocking start from when you first turn the key or is it after it warms up? When you idle it up then close the throttle up real fast does the knocking sound alot louder? It could also be the pistons knocking along the sides of the cylinder walls but if you find that it starts well then its most likely that that isn't your problem. What is the oil pressure like?
