7.3...for serious? The 1650 engine is in my opinion the best Oliver engine made, why fart away money and time on such goofy conversions. The ONLY conversion I would atest to and do to an Oliver is the Cummins conversion. If you can pull this conversion off and keep it looking good with the sheet metal and all, I will back down, but I think your time would be better spent on something useful. My two cents...

AND we are talking here of a high speed diesel.
40 mph road speed and not enough torque at low ground speeds even in bottom gear? Or enough torque/power to screw-up the backend at full throttle in the intermediate ranges? Might work out as a reasonable compromise, but I have my doubts....

what do you mean.. 7.3 is to big or to small???? is 444 cubic inches 230h.p @2700 RPM and 525FT of torque @ 2200.. i do remeber the truck this engien was in a F350. i remember me and my friend went to a mine to delive parts as a hot shot the short cut he always took had 2 feet of snow. we plowed that snow for 10 miles. he had it right to the floor and she wouldnt go into 4th gear just stayed in 3rd at 2100rpm.. the hole round trip with other stops we had to pick up from was 560km and we used 190L of fuel withc i thougth wasnt bad for the plowing we did. had a good load on to, around 5000-6000 pounds.

My opinion.... Anything can be done and look good if careful time is taken. I repowered my 1850 gas with a 4BT. I moved the radiator back to be closer to the motor and put an intercooler out front. Have not yet had anyone say that they think it has been repowered... My 7600 combine that I was planning on putting a 6BT in I believe now will be going to get a 7.3L non turboed motor. I believe the Cummins would be best in the 1650, but that powerstroke sure would rattle and look like a junior 2255 if done right!!!!

i like the sound to the 7.3L when you tramp them they have a different sound than any other diesel. I was thinking to run the exhaust up on both sides chrome pipe all the way up right from a elbo on the exhaust manifold. i was also thinging of chroming the rocker covers. paint the engine cockshutt red just liek the rest of the power train.

Actually, I would LOVE to see it done. I think the mini 2255 comment is right in line. I am sure the first person to suggest the Cummins repower got the same response, or the guy that put a big Cummins in a 5010/5020 John Deere, or the guy that had the idea to put a 3150 Cat motor in a Oliver frame!!!!! ! Just make it look professional and post the pics Andrew. GO FOR IT!!!!!

I think it would be a waste of time trying to put a 400+ cube V-8 engine into a tractor frame that had 283 or less inline 6 cylinder engine in it. You stated this engine would have clear over 200 HP. Rememeber, a 1650 was a 65 Horse tractor from the factory, and the rear end will not take the power your thinking about. Also, how the heck are you gonna get a V-8 into an inline frame? Didnt think of that one, did you? I personally think it would be pretty stupid to do such a thing, but if you have that much money and interest in doing such a project, go for it. Free world, I just think its a waste of your time. Cummins is proven, White started with them in the post Field-Boss era tractors; its a totally different game, and your horsepower is manageable. Two totally different situations. I'd recommend taking up the one guys offer for his factory engine. I'd take that in a heartbeat.

thought it would be a fun thing to do to make a pulling tractor sence the tractor needs a engine and alot of tlc... maby i should buy a cummins KTA 2300 V12... that v8 IH isnt no longer then that 283 or higher... i dont see the difference from taking a cockshutt 40 and putting a radial airplane engine in it and using it as a pulling tractor only was 780h.p and blew 4th gear 2nd pull.(that comes with abuse). this was an idea.

I don't think a V engine will fit low enough into in reply to concerned tractor fan, 11-09-2004 18:16:34
Even if you did find a way to match the two with a bellhousing I don't think it would fit in the frame. JMO

you could grind some of the tub frame out but then you run the risk of braking you might beable to get away with a 1800 tub frame.

well this is more for show. i would use it on the farm hear and there. theres a 1650 north of me for sale the engine is gone all the sheet metal and parts are in the cab just thought of makin a good machine with a elctronic engine and something that will rev high for pulling.. i would go with cummins. if you make a 360 cubic inch motor put 230 h.p out at 3200rpm on top of it a inline id be painting it green for handgranade LOL.. I know where i can get a good running 2002 7.3L for 900 with 70,000km on it. and yes id make it so all the sheet metal would fit right back exacly were it was before.. (id even chrome the rocker covers and let them hang out LOL):)

I have a 1998 Dodge with the Cummin 5.9 (350) in it and it has 605 ft torque at 1600rpm and 235 HP at about 2500 rpm. I can get up to 330 hp/780 ft lb torque with out opening the motor up to do it. They also make a 4000 rpm kit for pulling and the like. In a boat where cool water is unlimited the same motor is rated at 1100 ft lb torque. You don't even have to paint it green.
