I found an Oliver 2255 today. It has front wheel assist and a cab with AC. I'm not sure what year it is. It has a CAT 3208 and seems to be in pretty good shape. The interior needs some work and the front tires need replaced but other than that it "looks" like it is a good tractor. It has almost 4,000 hrs on it. I really don't know much about that style of a tractor and have not yet talked to the owner. I was told by a third party that it runs great and that everything works. I was wondering if anyone could answer a few of my questions? How much horse power might it be rated at? Is it a good tractor or is it a model that may have a lot of problems with it? How much money would be a fair price to offer? Any answers or additional information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Scott

I personally wouldn't pay more than $2000 for those things. And that is only for the engine. Cats are great motors, even with that kinda hours. We had two 2255's and hated both. Blew hydraulic lines left and right and that over/under blew out several times on both. Had plenty of power just nothing to back it up.

The engine was my biggest concern. Everything I've read about the 2255 so far has been very posotive. Thanks for your opinion but you seem to be in the minority. I do know that the 3208 is not a highly regarded engine among CAT mechanics.

my guess, based ona few i have seen, is that tractor would be worth anywhere from 8k to 12k. the FWA adds quite a bit to the cost - buit a cab with AC also adds a lot. the tire situation is, of course, bargaining power - you might be talking upwards of $2500 for four good radial tires. the 3208 is the better motor compared to the 3150 - the 3208 is the updated motor. others can tell you more about the motor. HP ios around 135-140, but can be raised with a screwdriver up to about 225, i believe. i do not make any representation on how good that is to the motor, tho :)
sounds like a good find. first thing i would want to know - is motor completely original? 4k hours is a lot on an original motor.

good luck.

Good points, mapleman. 3208s were recommended to have new rod bearings every 3000 hours, so this one would be due if the rod bearings are original. I would say your values hold up pretty well for my area too for that tractor.

On the farm I grew up on we had an 2255 and it was a good tractor. When we traded it off it had over 9000 hrs on it. The only thimg that we did was do the rods and mains twice and injectors and valve settings once, plus swapped out he govenor housing because it started to leak. The tractor was a good faithful old horse. Ours did not have a cab that is why we updated at that thime to a 185 White. I can say nothing but good about it as a power unit.

Thanks guys for all the info. The tractor has good rear tires the front ones however would probably need replaced soon. I do not think that anything major has been done to the engine. I know the 3208 was not CAT's best engine but I assume it was well maintained. The tractor as a whole looks very good. I guess the engine was my biggest concern.

our neighbor had one..

he twisted off the left rear axle 3 times the first year... but he had it weighted and fluided and turned up .. thats a bad combination...

if you let it slip I think he could have had a good machine.
