SJ; Yes the flapper on top is a seperate piece, you can pick them up about anywhere in parts stores. The threaded pipe in exhaust manifold is common to do what yours has done. I just welded mine together,no big deal.

This is common on a lot of tractors, also had it on our 1550. I've found the best way to fix for the long term, if you can find one, is a male pipe tap of the proper size to re-thread the manifold. While the threads are worn near the top, I found enough meat to cut new threads farther down. This was done probably 10 years ago, the tractor is used for mowing, hitting the occasional tree limbs etc. and is still holding fine. I've also done this on a red tractor years ago. I was lucky, Dad had access to a machine shop to borrow the correct male tap size with tapered pipe thread. You may be able to do this, or rent one at a tool rental. They would be expensive to buy, and aren't much good for anything else. You may have to also get a new pipe, cut it to length, and have it threaded. This is easier done than finding the threading tap for the manifold. The wall thickness of the pipe can be a problem as the thick wall has too big an O. D. for the muffler to go over. Good luck.

Yes, that's the way it is attached. Eventually the threads get worn down from the heat a vibration. If threads in manifold are good you can thread a new pipe. I've welded a plate to the pipe and made u-bolts to clamp it on manifold. Didn't work that well. Maybe someone knows how to build up manifold and cut new threads in it.

Another thing to do is using a Ni-Cad rod, weld the pipe to the manifold. Been done on our 1600 and it worked good until the muffler hit the shed. The weld broke, and nothing else. Had it re-welded and all was good again. Donovan from Wisconsin
