I know where there is a 350 cummins out of a fire truck with an allison tranny attached to it. The engine has 900 hours on it. It was a pumper truck so I am assuming it probably has a governor on it. It runs good and the tranny is suppose to be in good shape. What would be a good price to pay for it? How much work is it to put in a 1650 with the hydrapower? Thanks Jaker

Didn't the numbers on the older Cummins engines refer to horsepower, and they were all physically about the same size (huge)? I think they used some of them in the big Steiger tractors and others of that size.

Mike: That is correct. Horse power has ranged from 230 to 400 plus. All the same displacement, but after that, well get your CPL number ready.

as stu said, it wont work. To put a 3.9 or 5.9 Cummins into a 1650 is a headache, and I would recommend rebuilding the original engine. They are very good engines.

A 350 Cummins would be too large for a 1650. A 5.9 Cummins would be the best fit.

Isn't a 350 cummins a 5.9 litre? I know I have read about a "big cam" 350 cummins and the regular 350. DOh, I guess a 360 would be a 5.9 hmmmm. Could you still explain the difference. Thanks Jaker

the 350 cummins is a 855 cubic inch engine, lots of them in over the road trucks, im guessing it would weigh at least triple the 5.9 cummins found in dodge pickups----- ----- ----billyiron

With the low hrs. it's probably a big cam.
The older 350's had a way of eating themselves from the bottom up. I had an old style in a Peterbuilt that was hard on main and rod bearings. Larry

Our local Diesel mechanic says he pays around $2500 for a "take-out" 350 big cam. He deals with the same truck yard and they may cut him a break.

If my nightmares still serve me right, the cummins has an accesory drive on the right side. Where the air compressor, oil pump everything runs off of. I forget what I needed to replace on Dad's but, Oh brother do I remember trying to hold all that in place while starting the bolts.

Larry how many miles could you get in between bearings. My CH Mack now I try to replace 'em at around 350-400,000. My old "R" model I did every 150,000. It was set up to run with the big boys. Usually at 150,000 I'd start easing up on the fuel pedal and end up burning a piston anyway. I miss the days of having a fast truck----thin wallet!
