I have a friend who is looking for a plow for his Oliver 1600. What is the most number of bottoms he can use with this tractor? He is in Northern Minnesota so I dont know the ground condition up there. He thinks 4 or 5 and I said i dont think so Who is right?

Before buying a plow, what are your soil conditions? My grandpa bought our 1600 brand new along with a 565 3-16 semi-mounted plow. Barely crawled along in our hard clay. The same plow worked our 285 Massey pretty hard as well, it's about 85 HP. The largest plow I would recommend is a 3-16. Should be able to pull in 3rd gear if the soil isn't too hard.

He should be able to pull 3-16 pull type or a 4-16 semi-mount. I worked for a place that had a Super 90 Massey and a 4010 Deere and we would change tractors and plows between a 4-16 Oliver pull type and a 5-16 Oliver semi-mount. Each plow seemed to pull the same with either tractor. I'm sold on semi-mount plows.

Arnie, I had a 1600 tractor and always pulled a 3-16 pull type plow in heavy east Iowa soil, still have plow.
