I need to replace the rear main seal, and am planning to buy a sheet of cork and cut my own new rear main seal to replace the cork in the spring loaded housing. Does any one know the proper thickness ???

The old cork seem to be 1/4" thick material, but then it has probably compressed some....even better, is there an aftermarket seal to replace it with??

Bob: The late engines have a cast seal housing for a lip type seal. The cast housing will bolt directly to the engine. Find a salvage engine that is late enough and get the housing and a new seal and you are in business. Just did one on my 660.

Bob, I measured a new one that I have for an over haul on a 190 GLB , it is .275 thick .

Several years ago I made a seal retainer for a super 88 diesel out of 1 inch aluminum plate and bore to fit a standard oil seal . I used the seal plate for a pattern , counterbored
the mounting bolts and on this block the center
line of the crank is 3.032 from the pan rails ,
bore hole for seal ( in milling machine ).
