I posted this on the implement board. Some very helpful folks there responded and it was suggested that I try here. I have a 4 row Oliver 540 corn planter. I have been watchin for a operators manual here and on ebay. Haven't seen one as of yet. In fact a google web search of "oliver 540 planter" didn't turn much up either.

So any help on these two question would be appreciated.

1) Did AGCO buy up Oliver? Who who be a source for reprints?

"Floyd Co Historical Society for Oliver stuff" - If no other sources I'll try them.

2) There are three sets of plates. Could someone explain which is for what or what size seed?

245501B
245531B
245524B

This one is a bit confusing; "Those plates are "B" type John Deere" ....and in a seperate post....
"540 planters did not use the John Deere type plates, the 543 .... did" - ????

However, I may have my answer, "245501B--JD Plastic B6- for medium flats (common)
245531B--JD Plastic BO- for large rounds (I think)
245524B-- JD Plastic B 25- for rounds." - Correct?

We have an Oliver 540 4 row planter also. About the only thing I know about the plates is that there are some for round seeds and some for flat seeds.

As for a manual, there was just a parts book for one on ebay but it ended. You may want to try e-mailing the seller and see if you can buy it from them as there were no bids so it didn"t sell. Here is the link: Link

O. K. I made one of those posts and I almost stopped to look at a 540 planter went I drove by today. First question and I forgot to ask you this do your plates drive with two "lugs" or 3 lugs" The original 540 planters with the original plate set up need a conversion kit if you are going to use the plastic plates.
