Hello my name is John Mercer. I have a question about the Perkins diesel used in the model 40 and 50 after Cockshut stopped using the Buda diesel. In what year did they start using the Perkins? What was the displacement of it? Has anybody worked on the Perkins engines in the 40 or 50, were the bolts on the engine standard or british? Are there many model 40's and 50's still around with the Perkins? Thanks for your time.

The engine was the 4 cylinder L-4 Perkins. It is 269.5 cubic inch. The engine was also popular in Europe in the ag market. It was not used in the Cockshutt 50. It was used one year in the Cockshutt 560. It was then changed to a direct injection version. Same bore & stroke. There was one in this neighborhood on a "selfpropelled" tomato cultivator. He liked it very well except for one item. It would develop " play" in the steering linkage. It did have power steering. Best feature Very good on fuel- Check the Nebraska test on the 560 Cockshutt, you will see what I mean. I was doing a little research on some of the same information you asked about probably 5 years ago for a different reason. I do know you cannot tell how many were produced as they did not have seperate serial numbers. I want to say 56 was when they were introduced, Phil or Irv or someone else may have a better handle on that. I was thinking and remember I only worked on the local one that it had fine threaded fastners same as the 354. The L-4 was the first use of a Perkins in a North American made farm tractor Cockshutt must have liked the Perkins as the580 with the 354 that is out east has one of the first 50 354 engines built. Questions?

John & John,
One more thing.

I have three of the 40 tractors with the L4 Perkins diesel tractors running condition, one to be put together and three more for parts. Seven, in total of this PD model, plus many more Cockshutt tractors and parts on inventory.

John & John,
The Cockshutt 40 with the L4 Perkins engine was offered to the Canadian market at serial number 27001. The tractor, in Canada was the 40PD (red hood in 1955) and then 40D4 Deluxe (yellow hood in 56, 57, early 58). In the USA, the tractor was introduced in late 1955 as the Black Hawk Golden Eagle (yellow hood) and in '57 was called the Cockshutt Golden Eagle. The exact number built is unknown because the numbers ran with the 40 gas and 40 Buda diesel tractors. In total, 14,929 model 40 tractors were built between 1949 and early 1958. I believe the majority of 40's built in 56, 57, and early 58, was the 40 with the L4 Perkins diesel.
