I need some input on the reliable old 550s for a magazine article I'm working on. I have one and think it's the best little utility tractor ever built, but I need some other guys to round out the story.

Drop me a line.

Thanks,

Rodney

I have 2 550's. An older gas model and a newer diesel. They both run GREAT! I use them to mow, bale and rake. All around chores on the farm. I really can't begin to tell you how reliable they have been for me. The diesel starts every time even in the middle of winter with NO ether. I can send pictures if you like. Just let me know

Rodney -
I would be happy to help out. Understand I am not a 550 guru but I do know a fair amount. Check the ARTICLES section as I submitted a subjective view of the 550,others added comments to round it out. May be something to use as "boiler-plate".

The 550 is my favorite rig as it was my first rig. You can also email if I can assist - delete word (remove).

Would like to get a copy of the article when published or direct me to what magazine it is in.

Dad has a later model 550. I can't remember the year offhand. It is a sweet little tractor. My grandfather bought a Super 55 (the forerunner to the 550) new in 1957 I think. I remeber red paint coming through the white on the wheels. They put a big heavy Freeman loader on it sometime. In the early 80's the Super 55 was traded for the 550 we have now. The big loader went on it. More loader than tractor. The loader is gone now but still have the tractor. It mainly just mows roadsides, plows snow, and goes to an occasional show now.

The Super 55 and later the 550 was Oliver's answer to the Fords of the time. The 55 and 550 were more powerful, had better hyraulics, and had an independent pto. Apparently they were successful because Oliver sold LOTS of them.

Would be happy to help with your story. Dad's 550 has been repainted but it is no 4-figure paint job. It also gets used. Let me know. You can reply by email.

Matt
