I am converting my 1800C diesel to a alternater and called Andy at Genesee Products. After talking to him. He told me that they do most of there work with gas tractors He explaned to me what I neede for a diesel convertion. He told me that it would be a wast of my money to have them make the cables. He than told me where I could get the needed parts locally. When and if I ever have a need for what they sell, Andy will the 1st one I call!!

Genesee makes electronic ignitions, in your case make a alternator bracket, change polarity run a couple of connections, a diagram can found on the link below, it's for a Ford but the connections are basic.

I would like more details on this. Did you explain to them your diesel turns off and on with the key? That makes one part of the conversion just like a gas tractor. If you have a diesel with a manual shut off the easy way to unhook the alternator is to use an engine oil pressure switch. You do not need that. I agree on the cables. You need 2 wires. One has to be at least number 10 to handle the increase in amperage. I know your 1800 did not come with an ammeter, but has one been added, after all they all will be 40 years old real shortly.

I converted my brother's 1800 over to an alternator several years ago. In my opinion,
forget the ampmeter and just install a voltmeter.
I get a little nervous when you have the full
amperage of an alternator's output right there
underneath your dash. Since this is a daily
workhorse, I did it for function, not something
that was installed as a restoration piece.
But since the alternator has been installed instead of the original generator, he already
knew that.
