I'm trying to convince my wife that Oliver is a good name for our baby (that will be here any day). Help me out with some good arguments.

Oliver Wendell Holmes was a highly respected jurist. "Good Morning Starshine" was out of the musical "Oliver" or else sung by Oliver. Just stay away from Olive (as in Olive Oyl who hung around with Popeye) --Plain Old Pop (Pop) to my grandkids!

Go for it, you won't be the only one. I actually have two boys, Case and Oliver. They both think it's great that they have so many things around that have their name on it. And believe it or not, most people have no idea the boys were named after tractors. Their mother thought it was a good idea when I suggested it, as long as she got to pick their middle names.

They're 7 and 4 now, and more fun than I could have ever expected.

The child will be kidded less than he would if you named him "Cockshutt".

I know this is all in good fun, but on a serious note remember the kid is the one who has to live with the name. In my community there was a couple whose first born was a girl. They were expecting a boy and they were going to name him David, after his father. Had a girl instead, so they named her Davida. She's now 15, great student and a cheerleader. But everybody calls her David. Her namesake fled the scene years ago. She tried to go by her middle name, Ann, but no one would go along with it. Just my 2 cents. Jim.

Before my wife gave birth the first time, we made an agreement. If it was a girl, its was totally her choice for a name. If it was a boy, it was my call. The first was a girl so i got left out, but the second was a little boy and it was all my call. As much as i love olivers, i didnt go that route, but i guess i coulda bein as she had to live up to our agreement. Good way to find out how good your wife is too her word if nothin else.

Hey! I've got a cousin named Oliver, and his (5th?) daughter is Olivia. Guess what kind of tractors his father used?

I knew of a guy down in Arkansas named "Oliver Green". He builds bandsaw mills. But the bandsaw mills were painted a real dark green.

I tried three times for Oliver!!!!!!! in reply to SB in AR, 10-15-2004 11:56:45
I have a two year old and 4 month old twin boys.
I pressed for a long, long time for an Oliver but to no avail. Now we have a Hayden, Cullen and Charlie(the runt of the litter) I even tried for Leyland since I am pretty fond of my little limey 154.

At his point I am just glad she had me listed on the birth certificate.

I worked on a man's 550 one time and his first name was Oliver. We had an old insurance man here in the 40's and early 50's and his first name was Oliver. For some reason he went by his initials. O. P.

I guess you could name him James if it is a boy, as long as the middle name is Oliver.

I'd say go for it! It was suppposed to be my middle name (Dad wouldn't allow non of his $%*#!*% kids to be named after a tractor) Now I love to work on my Ollie's. It's a nice name, and it's actually starting to grow in popularity. We have a Collie puppy (1 1/2 yrs old)named Olivia. It was either Oliver if we kept a male or Olivia if we kept a female. Now we have Ollie the Collie.

Seems to me that Oliver is as good a name for a kid as it is for a tractor (as another poster said, of course, as long as it"s a boy). It reminds me though, one time when I was babysitting for a kid in my neighborhood, I happened to see a birthday party invitation. The kid"s name (no kidding) was: McCormick Deering.

I just got a kick out of that and thought maybe some others would too.

Not if it is a girl! Olivia would be acceptable as an alternative in that case. Better than "John-Dear" any day, or calling him a "Case". Sorry, not much inspiration at the moment. Best argument I can think of is I can"t think of anything else.

If you drive what I do, they are dependants. And they are all named after people.
