Hello, I am wondering what hardener to use for the AGCO paint? The dealer told me he doesn't use hardener, but most guys I have talked to say to use it, but I don't know what's compatable and it doesn't say on the label.

I have used Valspar hardener in AGCO Meadow Green paint with good results. You can get it at Tractor Supply for about $9.

I add the hardener, stir occaisonally for 15 to 30 minutes to let the paint and hardener blend, then reduce it with DuPont 3812S (fast) reducer, add a few drops of Smoothie fisheye eliminator per quart and shoot.

On a hot day, I will use a 50/50 blend of DuPont 3812S (fast) and DuPont 3864 (slow) reducer to improve gloss and flow.

It isn't Imron, but the AGCO paint goes on pretty well and looks good when it dries.

Good luck,
Scott Goff

Thanks for the info....I'm printing that out and putting in my repair book. About hardender. I read over on the paint and restoration page that once you open the hardener, that is has a short shelf life, like 1 or 2 weeks. So, even though the small cans aren't as good a value the big cans have to be used up or tossed. I'm not experienced at painting and finding out as I go. By the way, when you use that hardener, do you use a fresh air system mask?

Yes, hardener has a limited shelf life once opened. The same goes for the paint/hardener mixture, as usually you only have about 6 to 8 hours to shoot it after it is mixed.

The Valspar hardener you get at Tractor Supply comes in small cans (1/2 pint) which is enough to treat 1 gal. of paint. I have kept partial cans of the hardener for a couple of weeks and still used it with no problems.

If you plan to work with this stuff, buy, beg or borrow a NIOSH approved fresh air mask. You are working with materials that will do permanent harm to you if not handled properly. Even when you sandblast, use a respirator, not a dust mask. Many old finishes contained lead.

Good luck,
Scott

Yes, I always wear a respirator, but I'll have to look into geting a fresh air system. I know I'll buy my wife one for Chirstmas!

I would like to know the answer. If you ask the "Paint and Bodywork" forum on the list of other discussion forums those guys would probably be able to help.

Check with any automotive paint supply store. They will be able to help you. You will have a much better finish paint job if you use hardner.
