1955 Super 88 Diesel. First: what is the small brass valve or petcock on the middle outside of the air intake manifold for. I can't find anything on it in the owners or shop manual. Should it be open or shut?

Second: Someone has replaced the top cover of the hydraulic pump with a large cylindrical reservoir, looks to hold maybe an extra gallon and a half of fluid. Can anyone tell me the purpose of this modification? Thanks and regards! Ed

The petcock was probably used as a place to spray ether in to the manifold. Diesels don"t normally have enough vaccum to operate a milking machine. The petcock should be kept closed.

My dad had rigged up our Oliver 88 just like that to milk cows when the electricity went out. We ran the tractor half throttle and hooked a hose to the vacuum line. It would pull two milker buckets. Beat the heck out of hand milking them all.

Most likely it had a loader that had single acting cylinders and there was not enough oil capacity so a supplemental reservoir was needed,
