I recently bought a 6 cyl (gas) Oliver 77. It runs good and has been restored to some degree. It has a 6 volt battery. My neighbor also has a 77 that has a 12 volt battery. In the restoration process the labels on the generator, etc are painted over and very worn so I can"t tell what they say. So how about it you Oliver experts, should I get a 12 volt battery? The 6 volt starts it but turns it over very slowly. Since I bought it at an auction, I am thinking that someone just stuck that 6 volt in there to get it through in a pinch. What say you?

I have an Oliver 77 with the 6 volt system and it too turns over very slow. I was visiting with a friend who also has a similar tractor and asked him what he did to make his turn over faster and he told he bought an 8 volt battery and it worked great, and he didn't have to change anything over to make it work. I'm trying it this spring. If you go to your local garage they can point you in the right direction as where to get an 8 volt battery, their easier to find than you may think.

Replace all the battery cables. If they are original then they are over fifty years old and full of corrision. If they have been replaced then they probably were replaced with 12 volt cables which are smaller. If the ends were cut off and replaced with clamp ons then you realy have a problem. No matter what replace the cables and ends.
MAKE sure you get big enough cables, clean ground contact and 6 volt will do just fine for a lot less money.

I'd say 6 volt is probably right for it but a 12 volt sure does make them start faster. But if you put a 12 volt in you need to also put an alternator on it

OR a 12 volt DC generator/ regulator and 12v bulbs and appropriate coil and/or ballast resistor.

What alternator would be appropriate and where would I get one?

A good generator shop will also convert your generator set up to a 12 volt system. Depending on how comfortable you are doing it a Delco SI unit would be a good unit. You will need to run a 10 gauge wire to replace the old wire back to the ammmeter because of the output of any of the alternators.Otherwise you are creating a potential fire hazard. You will also need to switch terminals on the ammeter because your alternator will be for negative ground. And then it will be like RAB said.

Wow! You guys are great. I appreciate the info. Do you think its value would be compromised by switching it over? Thanks again.

I don't think your going to hurt the value of the tractor any by switching it over. I got a 66,77,& two 88's that I switched over to 12v and i'm much happier with them now. I could send you a diagram of how to switch it over if you would like email me and let me know.
