What is wrong with a diesel when it won't rev above idle without smoking and stumbling? This engine hasn't run in years but starts fair and idles good just won't rev up! Thanks Ed

When you say it has not been started in a few years, How many. Have you checked to see if it is one or more cylinders that do this? What color does it smoke. I would also be a little suspicous of a governor control that is sticking. you asked about timing. What do you have it timed at and how many timing marks did you align to check the timing 2 or 3?

I have no idea how long it's been since this tractor ran last. (I just bought the tractor this summer with the connecting rods hanging out the bottom!)This is the one I needed a crank for. I have set the timing at 35 degrees now and it seems to like that ok. (runs real good now in fact!) what do you mean by TWO marks? Thanks, Ed

That Bosch pump drive shaft runs at engine crankshaft speed. You always want to be sure the marked tooth on the hydraulic head is visiable in the timing window so you know the pump is on number one when the engine is on #1 TDC. I have no idea for sure but I would guess that it will run 180 out put not very well. How big were the mains in that engine?

Yes, you set the engine on the desired advance by the flywheel marks and then set the red tooth to the mark inside the injection pump (remove side cover to see it) I still don't know what it should be set at but I'll leave it at 35 untill I get the correct spec. It seems to run good there. cannot seem to get it to idle slow though, below about 1000 rpm it surges and will quit any lower. It has 2 7/8 mains and 2 1/2 throws both at .010 under. The crank is from a d298 and fit perfectly though there isn't any timing marks on the gears that line up! Thanks, Ed

That crank is from a DD298H H means the heavy crank. The standard DD-298 crank has 2 inch crank pins. Later hercules engines have 2-3/8. Now You know why I asked all the questions the first time. Is the idle set too low?

It is a D339H hercules has been rebuilt before so I'm not sure it's the original engine

Injectors?
That would be the first place I would look, I think.....apart from sluggish valve operation....
