Does anyone know how to tell if my 550 is postive or negative ground? It's early 60's, 12v coil, 12v delco starter, 12v delco generator (s/n 1100322)? Based on what I've read on these message boards (great site!), I think I have to replace the coil... Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

JS is right, I daresay, but don"t count on it. Unless you are certain nothing has been changed. Very easy to look at the battery and check which is live and which is earthed terminal.

Yeah, make sure you check the terminals. My electrical system looks completely original with generator, etc but it is a negative ground.

Thanks for the replies. I have the manuals, which tell me it is positive ground. None of the guages work, including the ammeter. I"ve got a new coil and starter installed. Will the starter run backwards if I hook the battery up "backwards?" And will I damage the coil? I"m tempted to disconnect the generator and try to get it running. I just don"t want to damage the starter and coil. I"m not concerned about lights or guages, none work (yet). Is the generator the only concern when hooking up positive or negative ground? How can I be certain how I need to hook this up? Thanks agian!
