Inspection of the Steering Motor Check Valve...???

The front steering, tie rod ends, etc on my 2-105 have no measurable play, however the steering wheel has about 1/8 turn of free play that appears to be isolated to the steering motor under the dash. After reading the archives, it appears the check valve may be the culprit.
Can this valve be removed and inspected visually or is there a better means of testing?
Or...should it just be replaced with a new check valve assembly?
Any personal experiences or suggestions regarding this check valve are appreciated.

Its just a spring and steel ball the last thing in the valve before the oil goes out the return line.Somehow both pieces lost out of mine.Be advised most of the pictures in the parts and service manuels DO NOT show those pieces. At first it got loose. In less than 1/4 mile it became undriveable.By spinning the wheel with 2 hands you could get it to turn ,but it would contine that way despite spinning the wheel the opisite way.You could have other problems looseness in the front shaft and the puller bolt loose steering collum.I would do more looking before going under the dash.

I have been trying to rememeber all day also how the shaft that the steering wheel attaches to is attached to the steering unit. I can not remember if it is the same as it was on the Saginaw units or not. I have seen a few of them work loose. I agree with Larry. Check that puller bolt and see if that vertical shaft is tight at the bottom. They work loose with time especially if you have larger than normal front tires or carry tanks out there.
