Oliver 1655 Ignition Problem

I have an Oliver 1655 gas with an intermittant ignition problem. Occasionally the engine will just quit abruptly. The funny part is that if you cycle the ignition switch from on to off to on again quickly before the engine coasts to a stop it will start running again, sometimes for just a few seconds, sometimes for minutes or hours. but cycling the ignition switch always seems to bring it back to life, if only briefly. i put a timing light on the high voltage wire from the coil and when the engine quits there is no voltage here, so i think that eliminates anything downline from the coil as the problem. i installed a new coil, dist cap, rotor button, points, condenser, and plugs but still have the problem. Help!!

I know you mentioned using a timing light to check high voltage - I'm guessing the tractor cranks then without spark... So, out of curiousity did you use a voltmeter or test light to check the power to the coil after it quit (without touching the key as you noted in an attempt to keep it running)? This would confirm the key switch. However, since you replaced that I would suspect the wire between the key switch and the coil. Look it over closely, You could also continuity check it with a multimeter.

Any AGCO dealer can sell you a new ignition switch for about $20-$25.

Sounds like the ignition switch is bad. If you can identify the ignition terminals on the switch, you could probably put a jumper wire between them and confirm it. Or if you have a volt meter, you can check it that way when it quits.

I have already replaced the ignition switch but I will use my voltmeter to see if it is working okay.

Back years ago when I was at the dealership we had a customer that drove us nuts for a while with his little Oliver 60 doing he same thing. The problem and don't ask me why, I do not remember anymore what the reason was but once we replace the ammeter he never had another problem.

Well, if I remember right, all current must go through the ammeter to be measured, so I guess if it had a short or some intermittent problem, that could do it.
