At a tractor pull, the discussion came up about a late model Oliver 88. What is it's rated horsepower? Can I find it on the Internet anyplace? Was there a kit to overhaul it to a higher horsepower? Is there such a thing as a Super 88 kit? What was its horsepower? Thanks.

My Super 88 has 135psi of compression per cylinder and is currently producing 65 hp at 540 pto rpm's on our M&W dyno.I pull in second up to 6000 lbs.I haven't looked into the cylinders yet to see if it has domed pistons but I will sometime.

The original bore for the 88 gas engine is 3 1/2" giving 231 cubes. These engines will easily put out some where between 38 and 45 horsepower depending on whose and which numbers you are looking at. The Super 88 used a 3 3/4" bore for 265 cubes and has roughly 55 horse. An 88 with a Super kit will typically be 50-55 horse. There is not a non-Super kit available to my knowledge. There is a M&W kit available with a 3 7/8" bore for 283 cubes. These engines will typically turn 60-65 horsepower. These numbers are with no other tweeking. For a time M&W apparently offered a 4" bore kit that would result in a 302 cube engine. I do not have any personal experience with one of these kits but they should give 65 to 70 horse (maybe a bit more) if you can find one.

Oliver 88 hp comes to mind as approximately 47hp, but you'll find the exact number from the Nebraska Tractor Tests. Super 88 hp increased to 54 hp from an increase in cylinder bore and compression, therefore the overhaul kits for an 88 and Super 88 are different. The Super 88 was the strongest row crop tractor in its class at the time.

The observed drawbar horsepower for a regular 88 is 36 , the observed drawbar horsepower for a super 88 is 47. The observed drawbar horsepower for an 880 is 54 drawbar horsepower. This increase in power was gotten in 3 ways,on the super 88 increasing the compression ratio , increasing the cubic inches from 231 to 265 and the super 88 had aluminum pistions. The increase in 880 horsepower was from a slight increase in comprssion ration and rasing the rpm's from 1600 to 1750.
